Treatment Options
Supportive Care:
Ensuring a clear airway, providing oxygen, and monitoring for respiratory depression.
Antidote:
Overdose is treated with flumazenil, a benzodiazepine antagonist, but its use is risky due to potential withdrawal seizures.
Pharmacokinetics and Dynamics
Metabolism:
Nifoxipam is metabolized in the liver via cytochrome P450 enzymes and excreted through urine. Its long half-life can lead to prolonged sedation and accumulation with repeated dosing.
Drug-Drug Interactions:
It is dangerous when combined with alcohol, opioids, or other CNS depressants, as these combinations greatly increase the risk of respiratory depression, blackouts, and fatal overdose. CYP inhibitors can prolong its effects, leading to increased sedation.
