Administration:
Sufentanil is administered intravenously (IV) for anesthesia and pain management, it can be given epidurally for labor analgesia, it is available in sublingual tablet form for acute pain, it is not effective orally due to extensive first-pass metabolism.
Dosage and Effects:

Opioid Effects: Intense but very short-lived analgesia and sedation. It produces profound pain relief, sedation, and sometimes euphoria, similar to other opioids.

Adverse Effects: Respiratory depression, hypotension (low blood pressure), bradycardia (slow heart rate), nausea, vomiting, itching, dizziness, and muscle rigidity.

Sufentanil is a clear, colorless liquid in its injectable form, it is also available as small sublingual tablets for pain management.
Side Effects:

Common: Profound pain relief and sedation, reduced heart rate and blood pressure, respiratory depression, nausea and vomiting, muscle rigidity, mild euphoria.

Severe: Severe respiratory depression that can lead to apnea, chest wall rigidity that may interfere with breathing, profound bradycardia and hypotension, acute opioid withdrawal symptoms after discontinuation, overdose can cause fatal respiratory failure.
