Metonitazene
Found in:
Fentanyl
Type/Reason added:
Nitazene
Relative Potency:
100 times stronger than morphine (18), about the same potency as fentanyl (13)
Treatment Options
Supportive Care:
Oxygen therapy, airway management, and mechanical ventilation, is crucial in severe cases.
Antidote:
Naloxone, an opioid receptor antagonist, can be used to reverse life-threatening respiratory depression. Multiple doses of naloxone may be required due to the drug's potency.
Pharmacokinetics and Dynamics
Metabolism:
Metonitazene is metabolized in the liver, likely through pathways involving cytochrome P450 enzymes. Its metabolites are excreted primarily via the kidneys.
Drug-Drug Interactions:
Metonitazene’s effects are significantly amplified when combined with other central nervous system depressants, such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, or sedatives. These combinations greatly increase the risk of fatal respiratory depression. Stimulants can mask its sedative effects, leading to accidental overdosing.
