Relative Potency:

200 times stronger than morphine (18), similar potency to fentanyl (6)

Routes of Administration and Effects

Administration:

Can be taken orally (pills or powder), intravenously (IV injection), insufflated (snorted), inhaled (vaporized), or transdermally (skin contact absorption in some cases). Due to its high potency, even small amounts absorbed through mucous membranes or the skin may cause toxicity.

Dosage and Effects:

  • Opioid Effects: Intense analgesia (pain relief), deep sedation, and strong euphoria. It rapidly depresses the central nervous system, causing drowsiness, relaxation, and a warm, heavy sensation. Users may experience an opioid "rush" similar to fentanyl or heroin but with a slightly longer duration than fentanyl.

  • Adverse Effects: The most dangerous effect of protonitazene is severe respiratory depression, which can occur even at low doses. Other side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, low blood pressure, pinpoint pupils, and muscle weakness.

Information Regarding the Substance

Physical Description:

Protonitazene typically appears as a white, off-white, or beige powder. In illicit markets, it may be found in pressed counterfeit pills, often mimicking prescription opioids like oxycodone or hydromorphone. It may also be dissolved into liquids for injection or nasal sprays.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Sedation, euphoria, relaxation, drowsiness, and pain relief. Some may also experience nausea, itching, and dry mouth, which are common opioid side effects.

  • Severe: Severe respiratory depression, loss of consciousness, coma, and death. Due to its potency, even small miscalculations in dosing can be fatal. Users may experience cyanosis (blue-tinged skin from lack of oxygen), slow or stopped breathing, and unresponsiveness.
