α-PHP is usually administered by insufflation (snorting), oral ingestion, smoking (often vaporized), or intravenous injection. Smoking is especially popular because the onset of effects is rapid, though it can cause severe respiratory damage.

Primary Effects: Intense stimulation, euphoria, elevated mood, increased physical energy, and heightened mental alertness. Its stimulant profile is somewhat similar to methamphetamine but often described as "sharper" and more anxiety-inducing.

Adverse Effects: Sagitation and compulsive behavior, pronounced paranoia and anxiety, hallucinations, unconsciousness, hypertension, tachycardia and cardiac arrest, dehydration, nausea and vomiting, seizures, suppression of physiological function (such as urination), and rhabdomyolysis. Its aftereffects can cause depressed mood, irritability, headache, and insomnia (35).
