Protonitazene:
A synthetic opioid from the benzimidazole-opioid class. It is structurally unrelated to fentanyl but has similar potency and effects. It belongs to the nitazene family, a group of potent opioids that have emerged in illicit drug markets as alternatives to fentanyl.

Protonitazene is estimated to be 25 to 100 times more potent than morphine and about 3 times stronger than fentanyl. This makes it one of the most powerful synthetic opioids currently being encountered in the illicit drug supply.

Protonitazene was originally synthesized for medical research but has no approved clinical use. It has recently appeared in illicit opioid markets, often sold as heroin, fentanyl, or in counterfeit painkillers.
