Description and Classification
Phenazepam:
A benzodiazepine that was developed in the Soviet Union in the 1970s. It has anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), sedative, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and hypnotic properties. It is structurally related to other benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium) and clonazepam (Klonopin) but is much longer-lasting.
Relative Potency
Potency:
Phenazepam is 2 to 5 times more potent than diazepam (Valium). A typical therapeutic dose is around 0.5–2 mg, while doses above 5 mg can cause significant sedation and cognitive impairment. Due to its high potency, accidental overdoses are more common, especially when mixed with other depressants.
Why It Is Added
Purpose
Medically, phenazepam has been used to treat anxiety disorders, insomnia, epilepsy, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms in Russia and some other countries. It is sometimes prescribed as a long-acting tranquilizer due to its extended half-life. Illicitly, it is used as a recreational depressant for its strong sedative and intoxicating effects, sometimes marketed as a research chemical or sold in counterfeit benzodiazepine tablets.
