Description and Classification

Methoxyacetylfentanyl:

A synthetic opioid and a derivative of fentanyl, which is a highly potent opioid analgesic. It belongs to the class of novel psychoactive substances (NPS), often synthesized to bypass regulations on fentanyl analogs. Structurally and pharmacologically, it closely resembles fentanyl but with modifications to its chemical makeup.

Relative Potency

Potency:

Methoxyacetylfentanyl is estimated to be 15 to 30 times less potent than fentanyl itself. However, despite being less potent, it is still significantly more potent than morphine and many other opioids, making it a highly dangerous substance.

Why It Is Added

Purpose

In medical settings, opioids like fentanyl are used as pain relievers or as adjuncts in anesthesia. Methoxyacetylfentanyl, however, has no recognized medical use and is illicitly manufactured. It is typically sold on the black market as a recreational drug, sometimes mislabeled as heroin or other opioids to increase potency and reduce costs.
