Alfentanil
Found in:
Fentanyl
Type/Reason added:
Fentanyl analog,
Opioid effects
Relative Potency:
analgesic potency:
72 times stronger than morphine, 10-20% potency of fentanyl (12)
Treatment Options
Supportive Care:
In the case of overdose or adverse reactions, immediate medical intervention is crucial. Supportive care includes maintaining airway, breathing, and circulation.
Antidote:
Naloxone (Narcan) is the primary antidote for opioid overdoses, including alfentanil. Given its short half-life, multiple doses of naloxone may be required to manage an overdose effectively.
Pharmacokinetics and Dynamics:
Metabolism:
Alfentanil is metabolized primarily in the liver via the CYP3A4 enzyme. It has a shorter duration of action and a rapid onset compared to fentanyl due to its lower lipid solubility.
-
Half-life: Shorter than fentanyl, with an elimination half-life of around 90 minutes.
Drug-Drug Interactions:
High risk of dangerous interactions with other CNS depressants, such as benzodiazepines, alcohol, and other opioids, which can increase sedation and the risk of respiratory depression.
